Quercetin-Bromelain Complex is a unique formulation of quercetin, buffered vitamin C and bromelain that supports antioxidant activity and protects blood vessels. Quercetin is a bioflavonoid that has excellent antioxidant activity. Magnesium ascorbate is a buffered form of vitamin C, which synergistically supports quercetin activity. Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme purified from pineapple, which is stable at the acidic pH found in the stomach.
Quercetin has a strong antioxidant activity that acts in several ways. First, quercetin prevents the oxidation of lipids. The gastrointestinal tract has an increased exposure to oxidative stress, due in part to the lowered pH. It is important to protect the lipid bilayer of cells in the gastrointestinal tract because they serve as an important part of the body's immune system. Secondly, quercetin prevents the depletion of the key antioxidant glutathione from cells in the intestinal tract. By preserving the level of glutathione, quercetin protects the metabolic activity and cellular structure of these highly vulnerable cells. Thirdly, quercetin decreases free radical formation in endothelial cells, thus protecting them from oxidative damage. Quercetin also mediates the release of nitric oxide and endothelin-1 (endogenous regulators of blood pressure) from endothelial cells, therefore providing vascular protection.
Vitamin C scavenges many potentially damaging free radicals and improves the ability of quercetin to preserve glutathione levels.
Bromelain is a supportive nutrient that assists in the breakdown of large macromolecular protein complexes. This reduces the chance that these complexes will leave the stomach untouched or in large fractions, and helps in their absorption.
